Changes to icon display
June 30th, 2008

You may have noticed that the icons do not show up when you go to the main page. This is intentional. They will show up when you zoom in on the page. The functionality was changed in order to increase the visibility of the trails.

The some of the icons have also been changed to make it easier to see where the parking spots are.

Static maps and elevation graphs
June 1st, 2008

As you may have already noticed, all of the detail pages now have static maps and elevation graphs. Unfortunately the static maps have a limitation for the number of points that they can allow so the trail is going to look less smooth. However, if you click on the image of the map, it will link you to the dynamic map where you can pan and zoom.

Part of the reason for implimenting these new static maps was to get around the limiation that some browsers have.

Up and running!
February 9th, 2008

As you can see, the newer version of HikeCT is up and running!

It is still very rough around the edges and I have a lot of work to do but at least now it is semi-functional. As time goes on, more trails and more trail descriptions will be added.

I am planning on working on the following enhancements:

  • A print link to remove some of the pictures and save ink
  • A ruler function for the maps so its easier to figure out how long a trail is going to be depending on the path you take
  • Elevation graphs for trails

Keep in mind that I am not a very experienced programmer and I have a full time job (not doing this). These things may take a long time to happen.

That being said, I welcome any comments or suggestions to the site.

Still in development
January 27th, 2008

I have been working to figure out the best way to manage all of the trail information. Originally I was going to use Google’s polyline class but after playing with that for a while, I realized that it wasn’t going to work because there was just way to much information.

After reading through some of the posts on Google Groups, I decided what I really needed was a tile sever. Unfortunately for me I am not a sophisticated programmer. I have only taken one official class and it was only a half credit not relating to web programming at all.

Luckily I think I have a solution now and I should be able to make it happen within a couple of weeks. I still need to work on some kind of site logo and a few a number of other minor details that I am sure will add up.
